Preserving Family Recipes

Image

Some years back I met someone that wanted to preserve their family recipes that had been handed down. They were also gathering  favorite recipes their children grew up with so they would not be lost until one day they would appreciate them or would want them.

So I gathered up my mom’s and my grandmother that have become familiar and well loved. I included the ones I have made recently and others that my daughter loved as a kid.  Now if you know me I like to be creative when I give a gift whether to family or friends. Have you ever received a gift and you liked the package better than the item?. That actually happened to me this past Christmas. But of course I would not say anything to indicate this.

I looked for a photo album that would fit 4×6 recipe cards. I didn’t want it to be to big or awkward. I wanted to make sure it would fit on shelf and not be oversized.

I found a photo album that fit my criteria. The pages had plastic sleeves that my recipe cards would fit in perfectly.

I like that idea that families that garden together stay together. Based on that concept – my daughter seems to like bird things in her house. So I decided to use that as my theme. I came up with “Birds of Feather, Bake Together”

Then I gathered all my materials and made a mixed media cover to house the recipe cards. Here is picture of what I came up with. I used tape around edges using her favorite colors blue and green.  Assorted paper to make my collage, ink, rubber stamps and rub on letters and then put modge podge over the entire front and back cover. I put the date on front so she would remember when she received this.

I am really happy to report she was really excited with her gift. She loved the cover too! Bingo nice when your daughter appreciates something you made for them.  She also loved this because I left room for her to add some others as time passes by. It seems- she uses the same size card I use. Like Mother like daughter. She’s my daughter. So that all in nut shell for today!

I took the plunge…

Image

I have dabble over the years with eating less meat ~ reading lots of diet books had the starting – stopping syndrome.

I read a book once by a not so popular author, but loved her outlook on health issues- This book is called “Is Any Sick Among You” I have so many tabs in this book that I have referred to over the years. I loved this book and promoted this by buying another one so that if someone was really interested in reading her book, I would loan that one out, so I didn’t have to part with mine. It was first published in 1974 and the eighth printing was in 1979. Is there any sick among you

I didn’t find this book on my own, but a friend of mine turned me on to this. This author was off the beaten path but I loved the way the book is laid out. But time past and I laid this aside.

One day, I was pondering and having a hard time doing things I use to do.  I was overweight and having health issues and realized I needed to do something different again, but I  put it on the back burner, just wasn’t motivated to do something about this.

Now time has pasted and  I prayed and asked that I might be healthy. I didn’t think any more about it. Then just recently I met someone in my church and she was telling me about her sister who weighed 210 lbs and had gone to the Doctor and he wanted her to loose weight and told her about this book: “End of Dieting”

End of Dieting

This friend shared a 3 pages outlining what this plan consisted of. She made me copy to look over. Then I ordered this book thru my library. After reading “End of Dieting”, I realized there had been an earlier book he had written so I looked this up at the library too. Sure enough it was called Eat to LIve by Dr. Fuhrman

Eat to Live has menu plans for the busy person  and the not so busy person. I started this about 3 weeks ago. I have given up dairy, salt, sugar and oil. I feel so much better.

I was told as child I was allergic to milk and suggested goat milk. My mother wanted no parts of that, so I continued on regular milk and suffered from this until now. I can’t believe the results I have had in such short period of time. I haven’t had any sugar cravings that I have had on my other diets. It is truly amazing. I did fall off this diet couple of time but picked myself up and started over the next day.  I don’t have this book down pack yet. But working on it. For instance the bean think I am not much of black bean or pinto eating person. It dawned on y one day that I needed to add this into my diet as well. He gave suggestion as to how you go about adding it to your menu plans. I started out with 1/4 of cup as I didn’t want to have

Since I have been doing this new way of eating, I have had more energy. I use to have acid reflux from tomatoes and onions. I can now eat tomatoes and raw onions without the ill effects. This has been astonishing to me. I shared this new concept with a few of my girl friends. One friend who has been suffering with her  sugar levels as diabetic told me she is down to 118 ,  she hasn’t’ seen that number for sometime. She feels it due to eating more raw vegetables in her diet.

So this is my focus presently and a permanent one. Hope this helps someone along the path. till we meet again.
